It’s Not Just About The Bikini Body: Fighting The Threat Of Obesity

Obese Shirtless Man Holding a Beer MugFor many people, weight loss is mostly about attaining that summer body just in time for that reunion or trip to the Bahamas. Few aims to lose weight for healthier reasons, as they find that adhering to a plan of exercise and a healthy diet to be too tedious. Going through a medical weight loss program may be the solution to that.

The Threat of Obesity

With a body mass index above the normal range, there is increased risk for many diseases. Among these diseases is Diabetes Mellitus (DM), where the body becomes resistant to insulin, causing blood sugar to rise, which can lead to many other health problems. Hypertension is another disease common in the overweight and obese population.

The increased weight may also lead to the development of breathing problems, such as sleep apnea, as the airway is compressed. An enlarging abdomen along with the loosening of the sphincter in the lower end of the esophagus may cause a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which causes stomach acid to reflux into the esophagus and throat.

Countering the Threat

With the threat of dozens of diseases, you might think that finding the motivation to lose weight would be a walk in the park. Putting your plans into action is a whole other matter, though, and this is where most find the greatest difficulty. Some people make diet plans where they starve themselves or deprive their body of much-needed nutrients. This is one big mistake of most diet plans, for two main reasons: 1) the idea of “starvation” often prevents a person from sticking to the diet, and 2) fasting can trigger a series of processes in the body that can cause more health problems.

It is best to seek advice when planning to lose weight, especially if you want to lose a lot of weight. Professionals can not only guide and support you through your program, but they can devise your program so that you can stay healthy and maintain the healthy diet and weight for as long as possible.
